With a budget less than $700, a customer was looking for a low cost OEM GPS module with high raw data update and affordable optional upgrade. The customer provided its own antenna and accessories. Hemisphere Crescent OEM board (p/n 940-4002-000) was selected and used in a navigation system that works with a SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar).
Both radar operator and pilot could view real time data during the observation mission. GPS and IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) data are fusioned to provide an Integrated Navigation System. The communication and processing are performed through an FPGA cable. Since the application requires to go in a straight line and be leveled, GPS data update rate was at 10 Hz. The Crescent update rate can be changed using a $ command up to at least 10 Hz through a terminal or a tool like Pocket PC (Hemisphere GPS – PocketMAX PC).
Once the mission is over, data is post-processed using GPS raw data and sophisticated algorithms to generate more accurate positioning.
